Plywood is the skeleton of every modular unit. Two grades come up in almost every quote: BWP, which stands for boiling water proof, and MR, which stands for moisture resistant. They look the same once the laminate is on, so it is worth knowing which one you are paying for.
BWP plywood
BWP plywood, made to IS 710 marine grade, is bonded with a resin that holds up to prolonged contact with water. It is the right choice anywhere water is part of daily life.
- Kitchen base cabinets, especially the sink unit
- Bathroom vanities
- Utility area cabinets near the washing machine
- Any unit against an external wall that sees damp during the monsoon
MR plywood
MR plywood handles humidity well but is not meant for standing water. It is perfectly suited to dry areas and keeps costs sensible in rooms that do not need marine grade.
- Bedroom wardrobes on internal walls
- TV units and display cabinets
- Study desks and book shelves
Why it matters
The wrong grade in a kitchen sink unit is one of the most common reasons cabinets swell and delaminate within a few years. At DesignO Spaces we use BWP plywood in kitchens and wet areas as standard, and the grade for every unit is written on your quote. That is also what lets us offer a long warranty on carcasses.
If you are comparing quotes, ask each firm to state the plywood grade unit by unit. If they cannot, treat that as a warning sign.
